Genetic Testing

Genetic testing is a type of medical test that identifies changes in genes, chromosomes, or proteins. The results of a genetic test can confirm or rule out a suspected genetic condition or help determine a person’s chance of developing or passing on a genetic disorder.

Why should I do genetic testing?

Many genetic disorders happen when someone has two bad copies of a gene, one from each parent. If you have only one faulty copy, you won’t have symptoms of the condition, but you are a “carrier” for it. So your baby will be born with the disorder only if both you and your partner pass the bad gene to them.

It’s important to understand how genes work and not to freak out if you are a carrier of something. This will help you decide what it is you look for in the other party involved with conceiving a child. It’s important to rule out any major diseases such as

1. Cystic fibrosis
2. Fragile X syndrome
3. Blood disorders such as sickle cell disease
4. Tay-Sachs disease
5. Spinal muscular atrophy

How does the process work?

Order your test on the Hapū Helpers website. (Contact us if you want Afterpay). We will send the kit out to you with a courier bag, please follow the instructions. Contact us, and we will arrange a courier pick-up on your behalf. Your results take about 20 days and will be emailed directly to you.
