When you test, how long you have held your urine, how much you have had to drink and how you read the lines all matter. If your urine is too diluted, you can get a lighter line or a negative result even while your LH is surging.
You will also see plenty of generic advice telling you to use your first urine of the day. We do not recommend this for urine LH strip testing. First morning urine has accumulated in your bladder across the night, so it reflects hormone excretion over several hours rather than giving you a fresh sample from a controlled testing window.
The LH surge happens in the blood first, then takes time to reach urine at a level a strip can detect. A later urine sample, after a proper three to four hour urine hold, gives you a more recent and concentrated sample. This gives you a better chance of detecting the rise as it is happening.

What does an ovulation test strip detect?
Ovulation test strips measure luteinising hormone, usually shortened to LH.
You have a small amount of LH in your body throughout your cycle. As you get closer to ovulation, LH rises quickly. This is called your LH surge.
Ovulation commonly follows within around one to two days of the LH surge. This is why an ovulation test can help you identify when you are approaching your most fertile time.

When should you start testing?
Cycle Day 1 is the first day of your full menstrual flow, not light spotting before your period begins.
Start testing a few days before you expect to ovulate. Starting slightly early is better than starting too late and missing your LH surge.
One practical way to choose a starting day is to take your shortest cycle from the past few months and subtract 17.
For a 28-day cycle:
28 - 17 = Cycle Day 11
Start testing around Cycle Day 11.
For a 25-day cycle:
25 - 17 = Cycle Day 8
Start testing around Cycle Day 8.
If your cycle length varies, use your shortest recent cycle as your guide and be prepared to test for longer. An app can estimate when ovulation may happen, but an LH test shows what is happening in the cycle you are currently in. See ovulation isn’t always day 14
What time of day should you test?
Use a urine sample from later in the morning through to the early evening rather than your first urine of the day.
First morning urine is a pooled overnight sample. Some of it has been sitting in your bladder for hours, so it does not give you a clean, controlled picture of the most recent part of your LH rise.
LH does not necessarily peak at the same clock time for everyone. The important point is that the surge happens in the blood first and takes time to appear in urine. A later urine sample, collected after a defined hold, is therefore more useful for detecting urinary LH than urine that has accumulated throughout the night.
Test once daily at around the same time so your results are easier to compare. This is enough for most people when testing begins early and each sample follows the method below.
If you repeatedly appear to miss a short surge, you may choose to add a second test when your line begins getting darker. This is an optional troubleshooting step, not a requirement.
Why the urine hold is essential
Complete a three to four hour urine hold before every urine LH strip test and limit fluids during that time.
This means avoiding urination and not drinking large amounts while you are completing the hold. You do not need to dehydrate yourself or become extremely uncomfortable. Plan your testing time so the hold is manageable.
The hold allows LH to concentrate in your urine. If you test without completing a hold, or drink too much beforehand, your urine can become too diluted for the strip to detect the LH rise clearly.
This can and does produce a lighter test line or a negative result even when your LH is surging. This preparation is part of testing properly, not an optional extra.
If you choose to complete a second test, complete a separate three to four hour hold before it.
How to use an ovulation test strip

Complete a three to four hour urine hold and limit fluids.

Collect your urine in a clean, dry container.

Remove the test strip from its pouch when you are ready to test.

Dip the absorbent end into the urine for 5 to 10 seconds.

Do not allow the urine to go above the MAX line.

Remove the strip and lay it flat on a clean, dry surface.

Read the result between 3 and 5 minutes.
Do not interpret the result after the reading time stated in the product instructions.
It can be useful to photograph each result in similar lighting. This helps you see how the line changes across your cycle. However, always decide whether the current test is positive by comparing the test line with the control line on that same strip.
How to read your result
A standard two-line ovulation strip has a control line and a test line.
The control line shows that the test has worked correctly.
The test line responds to the LH in your urine.
A result is positive when the test line is as dark as or darker than the control line.
If the test line is visible but lighter than the control line, the result is still negative. Faint test lines are normal because a small amount of LH is present through much of your cycle.
A line getting darker can mean your LH is rising and your surge may be getting closer. However, a darker line than yesterday is not automatically a positive result. Compare the two lines on the test you have just completed.

What should you do after a positive result?
A positive result means your LH has risen and ovulation is likely approaching. Do not wait for the test to become negative before acting on the result.

Common ovulation testing mistakes

Using first morning urine for an LH line strip.

Dipping the strip past the MAX line.

These details can be the difference between seeing a clear surge and assuming that you did not have one.
Troubleshooting your results
Your line gets darker but never becomes positive
You may have tested before or after the strongest part of a short surge. Your urine may also have been too diluted for the test line to reach its true intensity.
Continue testing once daily using the method above. If this happens across more than one cycle and you suspect you have a short surge, you may choose to add a second test when the line begins getting darker. Complete a fresh urine hold before that additional test.
You never see a positive result
You may have started testing too late, stopped too early or missed a short surge between tests. Ovulation can also happen earlier or later than an app predicted.
In your next cycle, start earlier and test once daily at a consistent time using the method above.

Your tests look positive for several days
Some people have a longer LH surge. Others have LH levels that remain elevated more generally, which can make line strips harder to interpret.
This can happen with Polyendocrine Metabolic Ovarian Syndrome, or PMOS, formerly known as PCOS. Can an ovulation test confirm that you ovulated?
No. An ovulation test detects the LH surge that usually happens before ovulation. It cannot confirm that an egg was released afterwards.

Start testing early enough that you are unlikely to miss your surge. Use a later urine sample rather than your first urine of the day. Complete a three to four hour urine hold, limit fluids and test under similar conditions each day.
A test is positive only when the test line is as dark as or darker than the control line.
If you never see a surge across several cycles, or your results are repeatedly difficult to interpret, ask for help rather than assuming you are not ovulating.
